Local councillors were given an opportunity to inspect the progress of the £2 million upgrading and reconstruction of Downpatrick’s new Bus Centre today (26th April).
The project, which is part funded by the European Union Peace and Reconciliation programme, is on schedule to be completed this summer, and will bring Translink’s Downpatrick facility into line with the world-class standards being rolled out across the company’s bus and rail network.
“The investment will mean greater convenience, comfort and accessibility for customers and staff,” said Gary Mawhinney, Translink’s District Manager for the area.
“Work on installing the new covered departure stands, heated waiting area, electronic screens carrying up-to-the-minute journey information, dedicated parent and baby room, and CCTV are well underway.
“When it re-opens, the new station will also be fully compliant with the latest disability access requirements, with low-level ticket desks and an induction loop for the hard of hearing. Our staff can look forward to greatly enhanced custom-built facilities, including a new shower area, canteen, and recreation room.
“On behalf of Translink I would thank all our customers, staff, and local business people for their ongoing support and patience during the construction phase, and we very much look forward to welcoming customers to their new station in the near future.” Mr Mawhinney concluded.
