Bus Services return to Spencer Road

4 October 2004

Bus services will make a welcome return to Spencer Road in Derry from Monday 4 October, thanks to a multi-agency initiative to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

"Unfortunately, traffic delays on Spencer Street meant we were unable to maintain our timetabled services, forcing us to divert services via Duke Street since April," explained Tony McDaid, Translink's Derry District Manager.

"Over the past number of months we have been working closely with DRD Road Service, the PSNI, Traffic wardens and City Centre Initiative, to resolve traffic problems in the area. We are now confidant that we can reintroduce and maintain timetabled bus services along Spencer Street." Mr McDaid said.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Stephen Kelly, from the City Centre Initiative commented, "Easy access and good public transport is essential to trade.  We have discussed the issues and hope that the actions of a number of the agencies will help bring about the necessary changes that will improve the business environment and access to public transport."

Actions taken in the area include the active promotion of the free parking at the McCormick's Harpers Quay Multi-storey car park to customers and workers in the area, a review of the parking restrictions and provision on Spencer Road and more active enforcement of the current parking restrictions which began on 20 September.

In addition, DRD Road Service has invested in modern traffic technology equipment to identify and resolve developing congestion problems in the area. The service, set to be re-instated on 4 October, is intended to meet the public transport needs of local residents as well as increasing trade in the area.

"With the development of the Distillery Brae site in the coming months, we will see an estimated additional 6,000 people per week visit the area, so it is hugely important that we ensure the proper infrastructure and traffic movement is in place." Mr Kelly concluded.

Ends.
