Ulster in Bloom - 30th Anniversary

The ‘clock’s ticking’ with the launch of this year’s Translink Ulster in Bloom School’s Art Competition

Translink would like to invite all ‘budding’ year 8,9, 10 and special education pupils to get inspired by one of the most iconic surrealist artists of the 20th century, Salvador Dali. January 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of his death which makes him particularly fitting as the inspiration for year’s Translink Ulster in Bloom schools’ art competition.

Now in its eighth consecutive year, the competition continues to blossom with a growing number of outstanding entries submitted each year from a wealth of local artistic talent. It is a creative and innovative way to learn in practice, as well as in theory, about some of the biggest art movements of our time.

This year, with Salvador Dali as the competition theme, we would like to encourage pupils to examine the work of an artist who portrayed dreamlike landscapes, optical illusions and futuristic environments. Pupils are asked to paint or draw outdoor scenes in the style of Dali and experiment with a range of techniques when creating their pieces.

The subject matter could be from a window at home or in the classroom, or indeed capture any country or town landscape. In keeping with Dali’s futuristic style they may also like to focus on what they would like to see in their environment.

Work can be submitted in a range of materials but we suggest work remains in keeping with Dali’s style and is as bold and bright as possible.

Up for grabs are a host of travel prizes for winning pupils’ families and their classmates, together with the opportunity for pupils to have their work showcased to a global audience on Translink’s website as well as at our busiest stations – Central Station and Great Victoria Street Station from April – June 09’.

The following hints and tips may also be of use:

  • The winning images will be reproduced on the internet, therefore images should be strong and use bold colours
  • We are NOT looking for Ulster in Bloom posters – so there is no need to include the words Ulster in Bloom in any artwork!
  • We are NOT looking for images of trains or buses, but rather environmental images.
  • The image should either be A3 or A4 in size.
  • The image should be 2 dimensional – e.g. paint, ink or other ‘flat’ media. Unfortunately 3D artwork cannot effectively be scanned, and therefore we cannot use them as Internet images.
  • If possible, please do not laminate or send photocopies of your entries for this same reason.
  • While we don’t want pupils to be restricted by rules and guidelines – we do ask that they consider a design approach when creating their masterpieces - so opt for bold, bright and boisterous shape over gentle colour, mild sketching or pale watercolour.
